Danah Foundation Expands Support with Mental Health Awareness Program for Parents

At Danah Foundation, our mission has always gone beyond simply offering children access to education, shelter, and basic needs. We believe in supporting entire families so that children can grow up in safe, stable, and loving environments. That is why we have introduced a new initiative — the Adult, Parents, and Guardians Mental Awareness Partnership Program — aimed at addressing the often-overlooked emotional and psychological struggles of parents living in poverty.

Why This Program Matters

Over the years of running the Danah Child Care Program, we have observed that many children’s challenges in school and personal growth are deeply connected to the emotional struggles of their parents and guardians. Parents who face poverty often carry heavy psychological burdens, including:

  • Poverty-related trauma caused by constant financial strain.

  • Feelings of hopelessness and shame for being unable to provide adequate support to their children.

  • Stress and anxiety that often leads to unhealthy coping mechanisms.

  • Breakdown in family relationships, including domestic violence and family separations.

Research conducted by our team and local partners has revealed that these challenges are directly linked to the rise of single motherhood in Uganda. The pattern is clear: poverty, when unaddressed, fuels mental distress, which in turn breaks down family unity. These struggles are not only affecting rural families but are also increasingly evident in urban households.

What the Program Offers

The Parents’ Mental Awareness Partnership Program provides:

  • Emotional support sessions for parents and guardians through group therapy and individual counseling.

  • Trauma recovery guidance to help families heal from the cycles of poverty-related stress.

  • Workshops and training on conflict resolution, stress management, and parenting skills.

  • Partnership with medical and mental health professionals who offer rehabilitation and ongoing support.

  • Community outreach initiatives designed to reach parents in remote areas who rarely access such services.

Our ultimate goal is to rehabilitate the mental health of parents, enabling them to become emotionally strong, resilient, and better equipped to take full responsibility for their families.

Current Achievements and Future Needs

We have already facilitated the first stages of this program with the help of volunteer medical professionals, counselors, and community leaders. The results have been encouraging, with parents reporting improved emotional well-being, better communication within their families, and renewed hope for their children’s future.

However, our current challenge remains funding limitations. Without sufficient financial support, we cannot expand this program to the thousands of families in need, especially in remote villages where poverty levels are most severe.

How You Can Help

Your donation to this program will:

  • Support the work of medical professionals and counselors who guide parents through recovery.

  • Facilitate outreach missions to remote areas of Uganda.

  • Provide training workshops and safe spaces for family therapy.

  • Help break the cycle of poverty-driven trauma, violence, and family breakdowns.

At Danah Foundation, we believe that a strong family is the foundation of a child’s success. By supporting parents and guardians mentally and emotionally, we are not just helping individuals—we are nurturing entire communities and shaping a brighter future for Uganda’s next generation.

We therefore call upon our partners, donors, and well-wishers to stand with us. Together, we can strengthen mental health, restore family unity, and ensure children grow up in supportive, loving homes.
